The Fire Court by Andrew Taylor

Set after the Great Fire of London in 1666, it follows James Marwood, who is a clerk at the Fire Court. He manages to find himself solving a murder after hearing his Fathers’ claim about a murder at court! Out of five stars I would personally give it a three, this book is able to balance murder mystery with historical fiction. Although it is 448 pages with every turn of the page you will find yourself guessing what happens next and who is at fault. I would definitely recommend this book as it is the second in the series which I would definitely recommend reading as well, they can be found here at Blackfen Community Library. So for all of you who love to solve fictional murder mysteries, enjoy twists and turns then this book is perfect for you. As it navigates the windy paths of London which soon become filled with murder and mischief!
The Appeal by Janice Hallett
This story follows a local theatre group who are preparing for a new production, which is suddenly halted when a relative of one of the members falls ill. Together the group start to raise funds in order to help. But as the story progresses, intentions and motives are explored further. Out of five stars I would give it four, as the story develops through a thread of emails shared within the book leading to deception and enticing plot twists. It will be a certain favourite for those of you who love a thriller! I would definitely recommend this book to any of you looking for a new thriller, especially if you’re getting bored of the typical layout. As through exploring characters and crime through emails and texts allows a new understanding and perception of trust.

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
This story follows a woman named Millie who has recently been released from prison. She takes up the role of a housemaid in the Winchester House with the aim to start again. However, she soon finds herself in a tense and disturbing environment. As she deals with her crazy employer, Nina and grows closer to Nina’s husband, Andrew. Out of five stars I would give this book 4 as it provides an unexpected plot complete with agency and deception in order to create mystery and confusion. I would definitely recommend this to any of you looking for a psychological thriller or if you have seen or want to see the film ‘The Housemaid’. Fortunately, I have read and watched both the film and book. So thankfully I can say that the film perfectly executes the tension you experience when reading the book for yourself.
