The Silent Patient – by Alex Michalides

This book is about a women named Alicia Berenson, her life is seemingly perfect. She is a famous painter married to a high up fashion photographer, she lives in a big house with windows overlooking a beautiful park in a rich part of London. One night her husband Gabriel returns home late from work and Alicia shoots him
in the face 5 times, and then never speaks another word. Alicia refuses to ever talk, refuses to give an exclamation. The crime case turns a whole lot bigger as it captures the eyes of the public.
Everyone is fascinated by her and wants answers. Because of the distress this is causing Alicia, she is sent away to a place called The Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London where she is safe and hidden from being put in the tabloids. A criminal physiotherapist, named Theo Faber has been waiting for a chance to work with Alicia. He is determined to find answers and eventually get The silent patient to talk about the truth of why she shot her husband but trying to find out the truth so badly, it takes Theo down to a path that threatens to take over him…

The silent patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a women’s act of violence against her husband. Who’s truth is unheard? The therapist is becoming obsessed with uncovering her motive, which becomes scary as he becomes so consumed by uncovering the mystery that everyone and their mothers want to know the answers to so badly.

I personally loved this book as it kept me on edge the whole time, wanting to carry on reading and wanting to know the truth. The plot twist at the end shocked me. The silent patient is 100% worth the read, if you love plot twists, thrillers, a book that keeps you on edge and has you gasping in shock as the truth unfolds!

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

The Bell Jar is a semi-autobiographical account of Sylvia Plath’s college experience, giving the reader a deep insight on her life in her younger years. It describes a young college girl’s mental breakdown and eventual recovery, reflecting Plath’s own breakdown and hospitalization in 1953. For me, this book revealed a confession of Plath’s raw feelings and thoughts behind her poetry and scholarships, in which she was most famous for, as well as highlighting her many endeavours, which include her various struggles and weaknesses at the age of nineteen. Throughout this book, I felt my emotions ranging from pity to joy as a result of its captivating realism regarding human interactions. Sylvia Plath strategically captures the challenging and harsh realities many young women face in their college years, which are commonly known as ‘the best years of our lives’. As a teenager in the 21st century, this book made me more perceptive, regarding my age through its use of language, structure and profound meaning.

Twisted Love by Ana Huang

Twisted Love was one of my favourite romance books as well as the character Ava. She’s so determined and resilient when it comes to taking Alex out of his shell. He is Ava’s older brother’s best friend, cold-hearted, and did not speak to anyone he wasn’t interested in except Ava, which gave it even more of a feeling as a reader to read on and see where their relationships goes off too. It has many unexpected plot twists, many moments where the feelings towards the book and reading it were all over the place such as sadness and frustration for some characters but the book is one of a kind and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series “Twisted Games”. I recommend the book, 10/10.
